In my life as a curator, only twice have a pair of eyes in an artwork ever really mesmerized me. The first pair gazed out from a painting by German surrealist Max Ernst called Human Form. The image wasn’t ‘human’ at all.

<![CDATA[In the Zone of Alienation: Tarkovsky as Video Game]]> http://www.nybooks.com/blogs/nyrblog/2012/may/01/zone-chernobyl-tarkovsky-video-game/

Zona, Geoff Dyer’s recent book about Andrei Tarkovsky’s masterpiece Stalker, has been much discussed for its almost comically thorough dissection of the stately 1979 film. In an account that combines summary, memoir, meditation, tribute, and citation into a kind of deluxe version of the TV recap, Dyer sets out to convey the hypnotic effect Stalker has had on decades of viewers, and on himself. And yet, after reading the book, I was left feeling that something was missing. In both the book and the deluge of Stalker coverage its release has occasioned, perhaps the most crucial, and most popular, part of the film’s afterlife has gone entirely unremarked: the video game version.

<![CDATA[Alphaland]]> http://tumblr.machinemachine.net/post/5240562153

Alphaland Ever wondered what’s going on in the background of your favorite video games, behind all the moving pictures and pretty sounds? A new Flash game from Jonas Kyratzes titled Alphaland answers that very question by placing players in a rough Alpha version of a minimalist platformer, and then placing them deep within said Alpha’s metaphysical guts.If it sounds confusing … well, that’s because it is. But it’s also pretty short, and pretty sad, and pretty pretty. If you’ve got a few minutes, give it a play over at Newgrounds! (via Joystiq)

<![CDATA[Desert Bus]]> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penn_%26_Teller%27s_Smoke_and_Mirrors#Desert_Bus

Desert Bus is the best known trick minigame in the package, and was a featured part of Electronic Gaming Monthly's preview. The objective of the game is to drive a bus from Tucson, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada in real time at a maximum speed of 45mph. The feat requires 8 hours of continuous play to complete, since the game cannot be paused.

The bus contains no passengers, contains little scenery (an occasional rock or stop sign will appear at the side of the road), and there is no traffic. The road between Tucson and Las Vegas is without exception completely straight. The bus veers to the right slightly; as a result, it is impossible to tape down a button to go do something else and have the game end properly. If the bus veers off the road it will stall and be towed back to Tucson, also in real time. If the player makes it to Las Vegas, they will score exactly one point. The player then gets the option to make the return trip to Tucson—for another point...

<![CDATA[SAME HAT! (tumblr)]]> http://samehat.tumblr.com/

For folks that haven't checked it yet, the newly re-launched SAME HAT TUMBLR is up and running!

The SAME HAT! Tumblr is curated and run by 8 contributors. It features art/videos/music and random whatever from the bowels of the internet-- all stuff loosely related to the imagined community that is "SAME HAT".

<![CDATA[My Famicase Exhibition 2010]]> http://famicase.com/10/index.html

With its latest entries having just appeared online, the Famicase exhibition -- curated by Tokyo game culture shop Meteor -- once again proves why it's a yearly art/game highlight. The premise? A collective of Japanese designers and artists imagine cartridges for their favorite Famicom (8-bit Nintendo) games that never were.

While this year's crop has strayed away from anything as blatantly/lightly controversial as last year's Bush Jr cart, it takes no less a sardonic swipe at Western culture with Burp'n'Shoot! above. The game, the artists say, is a "fun lazy redneck experience" that involves "sitting on the backyard couch drinking Budweiser and shooting at empty cans, watermelons and a broken TV" while avoiding the errant basket- and baseballs of the neighbor kids (Note: "Budweiser and gun controls required").

<![CDATA[Time Traveler Caught in Museum Photo? | forgetomori]]> http://forgetomori.com/2010/fortean/time-traveler-caught-in-museum-photo/

It’s the short description for the photograph shown at the virtual Bralorne Pioneer Museum, from British Columbia, Canada. The image can be seen specifically on this page (scroll down to the middle), among other items of the online exhibit. Did you notice anything out of place? Or perhaps, out of time? The man with what appears to be very modern sunglasses seems to be wearing a stamped T-shirt with a nice sweater, all the while holding a portable compact camera!

<![CDATA[Art Fag City » The Best of Web 2009!]]> http://www.artfagcity.com/2009/12/31/the-best-of-web-2009/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ArtFagCity+%28Art+Fag+City%29

Here’s a better model for year-end link lists: Only chose one link! I asked 18 of my favorite professionals to do just this, leaving the subject matter completely at their discretion. The format doesn’t solve the inevitable difference of taste issues between readers and linkers — one person’s trash is another person’s Titian – but it at least eliminates the impossible chore of having to rate 20 unrelated items. It also creates a list in which each link is special to someone. For me, that creates a year-end list worth reflection.

<![CDATA[█░LAST░█░M░I░D░I░█ █░BACKGROUND░█]]> http://www.kingcosmonaut.de/lmb/#73

It is an internet radio, a cyberspace shuttle, and a kind of archive. LMB takes you on a journey through an almost forgotten web that is loud, colorful, often "personal", and doesn't care about standards. Though it might be forgotten by many, some parts of it are still there, waiting to be explored. And maybe we can learn something along the way. What?

LMB plays a continous stream of MIDI music. However these aren't just random tunes, instead the songs are taken from websites where they are being played as background music.

While playing a song the LMB cyberspace shuttle flies through a stream of images that have been taken from the website you're (kind of) listening to.
