<![CDATA[Mark Fisher, on RWM podcast, 2012]]> https://huffduffer.com/therourke/532946

Mark Fisher is a writer, teacher and theorist living in Suffolk, England. His k-punk blog has been a well respected resource for cultural analysis on the web since its launch in 2003. In 2009, he published his first book, 'Capitalist Realism', where he explores the widespread sense that not only is capitalism the only viable political and economic system, but also that it is now impossible even to imagine a coherent alternative to it. In it, Fisher analyses the role of the media, the education system, the link between Neoliberalism and brain chemistry, and what he calls business ontology 'in a world in which internment camps and franchise coffee bars co-exist.'

Ontology is the philosophical study of existence. Object-oriented ontology ("OOO" for short) puts things at the center of this study. Its proponents contend that nothing has special status, but that everything exists equally—plumbers, cotton, bonobos, DVD players, and sandstone, for example. In conte

<![CDATA[The Exegesis of Philip K Dick with Erik Davis]]> http://tumblr.hrmtc.com/post/18676799423/the-exegesis-of-philip-k-dick-with-erik-davis

“March 3 and March 4: Philip K. Dick is undoubtedly one of the greatest Gnostic visionaries and literary giants in all of history. Much of what Dick wrote or accurately predicted was channeled by a series of disturbing mystic events in the early seventies. He received Gnosis by various means from entities beyond reality, and his astral ideas still grip the imagination of the world. Yet what Dick revealed in his books and notes was only a fraction of his visions and theological insights. He actually wrote thousands of pages that were kept away from the general public, even decades after his death. Until now. We discuss the earth-shattering findings with a member of the editorial team. We discover more secrets of the visible and invisible cosmos; and also realize that it will take years to properly decipher what is more than an arcane religious text but living, holy information itself that might free the spirit of humanity once and for all.

<![CDATA[Jon Ronson On… Voices in the Head]]> http://huffduffer.com/jshield/40206

Eleanor Longden started to hear voices in her head when she was at university and was diagnosed as a schizophrenic - a label she totally rejects. Now she is a high achieving academic. What started the voices and how did she get to a point where she not only lives happily with the voices that still exist but also works with others who have the same experience? With contributions from writer Graham Linehan and comedian Josie Long.

<![CDATA[Errors in Things and “The Friendly Medium”]]> http://machinemachine.net/text/ideas/errors-in-things-and-the-friendly-medium

What is it about a particular media that makes it successful? Drawing a mini history from printing-press smudges to digital compression artefacts this lecture considers the value of error, chance and adaptation in contemporary media. Biological evolution unfolds through error, noise and mistake. Perhaps if we want to maximise the potential of media, of digital text and compressed file formats, we first need to determine their inherent redundancy. Or, more profoundly, to devise ways to maximise or even increase that redundancy. This presentation was designed and delivered as part of Coventry University, Media and Communication Department’s ‘Open Media‘ lecture series. Please browse the Open-Media /stream and related tags (in left column) for more material

(Audio recording of talk coming very soon)

Many thanks to Janneke Adema for inviting me to present this talk and for all her hard work with the series and podcast.

<![CDATA[Open Media (lecture series schedule)]]> http://coventryopenmedia.wordpress.com/schedule/

The concept of openness is often employed as part of a radical critique of the closed-off worlds of what might be called ‘traditional media’. It is variously used to urge for the right to transparency, the ethics of sharing, the value of re-use and the benefits of connecting.

This series of research seminars will explore various aspects of openness. Special attention will be given to the benefits and drawbacks of openness, and to the many possibilities openness offers for the future of media production, use and critique.
