On Friday May 30th come to Arebyte Gallery, Hackney Wick, for an evening of GLTI.CH Karaoke! Sing with people present and telepresent, near and far in a raucous party at the edge of London. Invitation to Telepresent People Can’t make it to the gallery in person? Want to join or even host your own GLTI.CH Karaoke Portal on May 30th? Hook into the real-time live crooning fun via our Tinychat page: http://tinychat.com/gltich (For step-by-step instructions to join us: http://glti.ch/host-a-glti-ch-portal) All you’ll need is an internet connection, a webcam and a set of speakers/headphones loud enough to keep your feet moving and your vocal chords vibrating. Bio GLTI.CH is a collaborative mess between Kyougn Kmi and Daniel Rourke that breaches hopeless distances with cultural and technical make-dos. Our work brings people together in glitchy karaoke fests, broken DJ mix-haps, and other kludged-together happenings. Since April 2011 we’ve exposed the course of accidents, temporal lyrical disjoints and technical out-of syncs between, among others, London/Seoul/Kumamoto with Meanwhile Space, Liverpool/London with MercyUK, Amsterdam/Chicago/London with glidottcslashh, Amsterdam/Berlin/Seoul/Manchester as part of ANDfestival, and with The White Building, Hackney Wick. We’ve made the mishmashed world of GLTI.CH through play and we hope you’ll join us.

Washing Machine Magazine is an independent, multimedia publication that showcases projects by creative professionals working in sound and image. It is presented through two connected platforms: a printed publication and a website that integrates the print content through video and audio supplements. Every featured project reflects the contemporary age in its multi-faceted reality. Art and media are explored where artists and designers communicate concepts, re-configure ideas, collaborate and combine different elements. Washing Machine Magazine features interviews with artists , multimedia content and examines the impact of innovative, digital tools and new processes on creative media today. Issue 1 showcases emerging artists’ and designers’ projects that represent basic natural elements through digital media. In some projects visuals describe sounds, in some others sounds describe physical objects. The first issue’s title ‘White Wash’ indicates not only purity, energy and freshness but also a starting point – a blank space to interact with. info@washingmachinemagazine.com www.washingmachinemagazine.com facebook.com/washingmachinemagazine

<![CDATA[Thomson & Craighead | More Songs of Innocence and of Experience, 2012]]> http://vimeo.com/65641444

'More Songs of Innocence and of Experience', takes text from 'spam' emails and displays them in the style of a karaoke machine, accompanied by the kind of anodyne music favoured by supermarkets and shopping centres. The text derives from emails purporting to come from the likes of Mrs. Gadhafi or a successful but terminally ill millionaire, offering spurious financial deals couched in plaintive, flowery language. Thomson & Craighead are interested in the fantasies at work in the scenarios that these emails play out - fantasies mirrored in the aspirational projections of the karaoke singer - in which plain text on a screen promises an unrealistic wish fulfillment of the most unlikely variety.Cast: Carroll / FletcherTags:

<![CDATA[What makes out today’s notworking is the social glitch]]> http://machinemachine.net/text/out-loud/what-makes-out-todays-notworking-is-the-social-glitch

For 3 years I have collaborated on a project with Kyoung Kim. Known as GLTI.CH Karaoke, or sometimes just GLTI.CH, we’ve plotted the course of accidents, of temporal lyrical disjoints and technical out-of-syncs through a wide variety of different mediums, spaces and social conditions. This week saw what feels like the climax of our experiments, a three day – 67 hour – installation at CRYSTALLIZE, an exhibition of new media art held alongside the 2013 Korea Brand & Entertainment Expo, at Old Billingsgate, London. GLTI.CH has played a significant part in my practice and thus my thinking over the last 3 years. Working with Kyoung has afforded me countless experiences and opportunities, and introduced me to the world of glitch, digital, net and new media arts and artists. The project is not over, but its Karaoke phase is drawing to a conclusion. I thought it would be a good time to republish this half-considered manifesto I wrote a while back. 15 Statements about Glti.ch Notworking What makes out today’s networking is the notworking. There would be no routing if there were no problems on the line. Spam, viruses and identity theft are not accidental mistakes, mishaps on the road to techno perfection. They are constitutional elements of yesterday’s network architectures. Lovink, Gert. (2005), “The Principle of Notworking Concepts in Critical Internet Culture,” p. 10 GLTI.CH Karaoke is not a hack or some fancy programming. It’s taking the front-end of things and trying to make something else. We’ve made the mishmashed world of GLTI.CH Karaoke through play and we hope you’ll sing with us. karaoke, glti.ch (2011), “WHAT IS GLTI.CH KARAOKE?”

Glti.ches are more than aesthetic revelations: as software crashes, or hardware halts to a stutter, the soft underbelly of the notwork is exposed. The trick is to see the glti.ch not as an abhorrence, but as a signal of noisy potential: error and noise are an implicit feature of digital materiality. What Gaston Bachelard called ‘Desire Paths’, physical etchings in our surroundings drawn by the thoughtless movement of (human) feet, also exist online. For those versed in the language of the glti.ch, desire equals subversion and the means of flight – a way to reverse the roles of power. The line of desire in these cases is often laid directly over the enclosed path. Being buffered along by the unruly torrents of technical failure, the true semblance of the glti.ch is impossible to pin down: notwork control mechanisms have desirable unintended effects. The kludge is a hands-on, makeshift solution, to an unpredictable technical or social problem: 100% of cargo cult coders, pirates, glti.ch artists and hackers started out as kludgers. Algorithms that churn your Google search, or offer you potential meta-data with which to imbricate your image collection into the logic of the database, have themselves become actors in the play of human relations. Digital formats as diverse as ePub, DivX, and GIF, and software platforms from the likes of Google, Microsoft or Apple, trace narrative arcs which are themselves transcodable relations. Interruption, stutters and breaks force us into encounters with the world, exposing the circuitry that we as consumers are expected to elude into the background. Digital copies, being copied, forever copying, exert an unruly behaviour that exposes the material world. The most astonishing thing about the notwork is how any order can be maintained in it at all. The more regulations imposed upon the notworks, the more interesting the resulting glti.ches will be in their variation/liberation. Human beings are material entities, buffered by the same stops and starts as the notwork. Participating in the glti.ch, in the artifact that exposes the failure, is to align oneself with material reality. The glti.ch is a social phenomenon.

We just finished a 3 day marathon we called GLTI.CH Portals, at CRYSTALLIZE exhibition. Part of a 3 day New Media art installation at the 2013 Korea Brand & Entertainment Expo, held at Old Billingsgate, London. Below are photos from the event. You can also listen to a brief interview we did with BBC Radio’s Dan Damon for World Update (listen from about 17mins in). We really want to thank everyone who took part and all those who brought this exhibition together, especially Stephanie Seungmin Kim, Heejin Cho and Hyemi Na for inviting, curating and welcoming us into the Korean/UK collaborative fold. This might very well be the last time GLTI.CH host a Karaoke event. We have news of this soon, but for now, please enjoy the wondrous smiles on all the GLTI.CH Portal participants’ faces.

[for In Media Res: mediacommons.futureofthebook.org/imr/] Kyougn Kmi and Daniel Rourke [collectively known as GLTI.CH Karaoke ] facilitate happenings where participants are invited to sing karaoke duets with one another. Breaking from tradition, participants are paired with partners halfway across the world, singing together over the Internet. “Using free versions of Skype, YouTube and collaborative web software livestream.com, we orchestrated duets between people who had never met each other, who didn’t speak the same language, bypassing thousands of geographic miles with glitchy, highly compressed data and a little bit of patience.” [ GLTI.CH Karaoke, from their website ] At these ha[ng]ppenings Kmi and Rourke go to great lengths to avoid glitches + delays + drops [having been present at a few I can attest to this] while trusting in the network’s unreliable signal to not render their name [GLTI.CH] innapropriate. src footage [in order of appearance]: @birmingham: youtube.com/watch?v=KXPy0WtjfBg @manchester: youtube.com/watch?v=8-ARWTyWPXo @amsterdam: youtube.com/watch?v=W-2t1jB7YKw @chicago: vimeo.com/33420876 @camden: youtube.com/watch?v=pLDEHEJWqmE

We awoke Bleary eyed today, memories buzzing in our noisy heads. Did last night really happen? Were you there? Can you prove it? Machines by Other Means, an event curated by Christina Millare and Cornerhouse for Abandon Normal Devices Festival, was bound to be a winner. Five hotel rooms in The Salutation Hotel & Pub were to become the venue for a whole series of monstrously noisy events. Noisy sounds; noisy approaches; noisy intentions. A house party in a hotel is so right for GLTI.CH Karaoke it hurts. And it did hurt, in a good way. Countless joyful krooners crammed into our meagre space, propping themselves up on springy hotel beds and tasty Northern fine ales. We were joined by a whole host of online head-swayers, who logged into our tinychat webspace from 9pm until 2am (Seoul/London/Berlin/?????). They sang, we sang louder; they laughed; we laughed with them; they requested songs, we gathered around the webcam and joined in singing with them. It was a ball. Below are some photos of the event (see them on Facebook too), with some snazzy official press photos to follow . Videos have been rumoured to exist… Lots of thanks to EVERYONE who attended, live in Manchester Meatspace, or virtually via the magical interwebs. Please leave a comment if you were there, or hit us up at our Facebook and Twitter pages. Special thanks to Jennifer Chan, Nathan Jones, Antonio Roberts, Rosa Menkman, Mark Amerika, Bo Ningen, Linda Stupart for trying to logon so hard, and especially Christina Millare and everyone at the Cornerhouse for putting up with us!

<![CDATA[Machines by Other Means, Manchester]]> http://glti.ch/machines-by-other-means/

Through mistranslation, malfunction or a signal of the wrong duration, this night is not just a celebration of the error itself but a visual and sonic manifestation of improvised mayhem. What if machines were reconfigured to corrupt? Expect overheated batteries, projectors chewing images and sonic assaults like the sound of furniture exploding – all from the comfort of The Salutation Hotel. Machines By Other Means is a house party gone wrong, featuring MOGA mastermind Mark Amerika’s live manifesto on glitch in collaboration with sound artist, Twine (Ghostly Records), Lydia Lunch’s provocative musings on contemporary society, squalling and spacey sonicism by noise merchants Bo Ningen, ‘Holy Artist’ Bjorn Veno’s spontaneous exploration of technological spirituality, Oscar Lhermitte’s drill machine cameras and collaborative karaoke devised by GLTI.CH. Join us in person (Facebook Event) or Join us LIVE online (tinychat.com/gltich) at 9pm GMT On 30th of August we hit AND Festival, singing our hearts out from a bedroom at the Salutation Hotel in Manchester. In the build-up to our transglobal sing off, we’d love to hear what your favourite Karaoke songs are and why. Do you sing Prince’s “Kiss” to woo? U2′s “With or Without You?” when you want to sway in the booth holding your lighter aloft? Johnny Cash’s “Walk the Line” to start the night off with a bang? Bon Jovi’s “Livin on a Prayer” to finish at a climax? Rihanna’s “Umbrella” when it’s raining outside? We invite your responses as we rethink the karaoke songbook. One for lovers of song and story. That celebrates the emancipated crooner and highlights our unique experiential associations and stories with the music we love. It’ll be online and indexed by the names (or alias if you’d like) and descriptions/stories of those who sing them and then hyperlinked to the respective song on YouTube so that others may feel what you feel when you sing what you sing. Any/all responses very welcome here, at our Facebook Event page or via email at gltiches@gmail.com (ideally between now and August 20th). Let the GLTI.CH Karaoke Songbook Revolution begin!

<![CDATA[The Creators Project interview: Sing Glitchy Karaoke Over The Web]]> http://thecreatorsproject.vice.com/blog/sing-glitchy-karaoke-over-the-internet

The Creators Project interview: Sing Glitchy Karaoke Over The Web: London-based conspirators Kyoung Kim and Daniel Rourke are on a mission to kludge and con the world into partaking in an internet-based, 24-hour karaoke marathon. We spoke to them to find out more about what that means, exactly. The Creators Project: How would you describe GLTI.CH in four words without using karaoke? GLTI.CH: Collaborative technological error wallowing. What exactly is GLTI.CH and what is it trying to do?GLTI.CH is about kludging. A kludge is a make-do solution to an immediate technical problem, like stopping a table from wobbling by folding a napkin and shoving it under one leg. It’s not a hack or some fancy programming. It’s looking at technology as a building block, not an end product. We’re wannabe hackers, but we’re amateur programmers at best. It approaches technology like Lego blocks and GLTI.CH Karaoke is the mishmashed world we make through play. We want to kludge people together, breach hopeless distances with cultural and technical make-dos. Karaoke has a liberating potential. Before it was about achieving the right notes or knowing the words by heart, but karaoke is about togetherness first and foremost. A pop song can become an emotional centre of gravity for the people in the room, even for a generation. So GLTI.CH is aiming to hijack that, to turn a “make-do” into a cherished moment. And GLTI.CH is also FUN. Especially when there’s beer. Lots of beer.

I would like to display Karaoke lyrics over a live webcam feed. This means I might need a skype (or equivalent) plugin that plays the music & lyrics, or find some karaoke software with the ability to display lyrics over a transparent background. (That is, to have windowless karaoke display, and run the webcam feed behind it. )

All the software (I can find) to play .CDG (karaoke lyric standard) files forces them to be played with an image background, or over a video file. (I am using a PC to do this job, but do have access to Mac if necessary.)

The ability to display the karaoke lyrics over a webcam feed is the most important thing. My aim is to have the feed act as the 'background' to the karaoke lyrics, whether that happens using one program or two doesn't matter too much. I would ideally like to able able to record the webcam feed AND the lyrics into one final video file, but I assume this can be done with a video capture program anyway.

The closest option I have found so far is this plugin for winamp.

I can get a transparent background, but the plugin displays all lyrics simultaneously, not in a traditional karaoke fashion.

Winamp might be a desirable option. Build a plugin for the purpose perhaps? Hack an existent plugin?

Some other karaoke software I have tried (unsuccessfully):

Karafun Karaoke5 PyKaraoke

Thanks in advance!

A few pointers:

  1. Please post only photos of karaoke screenshots, including lyrics on a TV screen. Nothing else, especially, no people should be in frame.

Karaoke! uh oh uh oh

  1. Screenshots of points in the song where their are no lyrics will be accepted if they are humorous and/or interesting.

  2. Post as many shots as you like, but perhaps don't more than 2 or 3 from any one song at once.

  3. Bonus points awarded if the name of the song and artist is contained in the tags and/or description of the photo. Use this format:
